Discovering the Sacred City of Dwarka
Mythological Significance
Dwarka, often called the “Kingdom of Lord Krishna,” is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and one of the Sapta Puris—the seven ancient holy cities in India. According to Hindu scriptures, Dwarka was established by Lord Krishna himself after leaving Mathura. It is believed that the original city of Dwarka was submerged under the Arabian Sea, and the present city stands on its remains.
Dwarkadhish Temple – The Heart of Dwarka
At the center of Dwarka’s spiritual aura stands the Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir. This magnificent five-storied structure, supported by 72 pillars, dates back over 2,500 years, though it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times throughout history. The temple’s black idol of Lord Krishna, known as Dwarkadhish or the “King of Dwarka,” is the primary deity worshipped here. Pilgrims visit this temple to seek divine blessings and to witness the grandeur of traditional aartis performed daily.
Somnath – The Eternal Shrine of Lord Shiva
The Legendary History of Somnath Temple
The Somnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, representing the eternal light of cosmic power. According to mythology, the temple was originally built by the Moon God (Soma) in gold, then rebuilt by Ravana in silver, Krishna in wood, and finally by King Bhimdev in stone. The word “Somnath” translates to “The Lord of the Moon,” signifying Shiva’s role in restoring the Moon God’s lost brilliance.
A Temple that Defied Time
Over the centuries, Somnath Temple faced repeated invasions and destruction by foreign rulers, most notably by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 AD. However, each time it was rebuilt, symbolizing the unbreakable faith and resilience of the Hindu community. The present temple, reconstructed in 1951 under the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stands as a symbol of cultural pride and devotion. Its majestic Chalukya-style architecture, facing the Arabian Sea, creates an awe-inspiring sight that leaves every visitor spellbound.
Spiritual Experience at Somnath
Pilgrims visiting the temple experience a deep sense of peace and devotion, especially during the morning and evening aartis. The temple complex also houses a museum showcasing ancient artifacts, a sound and light show narrating its glorious history, and a Triveni Sangam where three rivers—Hiran, Kapila, and Saraswati—are believed to meet.
Journey Between Dwarka and Somnath
The Dwarka Somnath tour typically covers around 240 kilometers along the scenic Saurashtra coastline of Gujarat. The route offers glimpses of charming coastal villages, salt pans, and natural landscapes that enhance the overall travel experience. Many Dwarka & Somnath Tour packages include comfortable transportation, guided temple visits, and accommodations near the temple sites for ease and convenience.
